Why Build a Network State?

Network states are digital-first communities that form around shared goals and establish a degree of sovereign governance. These political formations offer significant advantages over the nation-state system at a time when trust in the latter is declining. They incentivise competition, encouraging optimisations that provide real value to their citizens, and participation in them requires explicit consent, giving them a far greater claim to legitimacy than the implied consent of the incumbent system.

Almost every aspect of human experience is now digital – our identities, our conversations, our transactions, and our coordination are online. Yet the infrastructure underpinning this digital existence remains fragile, opaque, and subject to external control. As people become more interconnected, the tools needed to secure our right to privacy and autonomy have not kept pace. This disconnect has led to a growing dependence on systems that are neither transparent nor trustworthy.

A network state is an online community that develops into a society with its own culture, economy, legal frameworks, and formal institutions. By organising these features atop a politically neutral technology stack, the network state can establish a degree of sovereignty against the prevailing nation-state system, enabling its citizens to administer their own affairs autonomously through voluntary consent-based governance protocols.

Pavol Lupták's 'The Crisis of Homogeneous Authoritative Systems and the Future of Modern Tribes' provides a sobering look at legacy systems and how we transition out of them into more freedom-oriented spaces and virtual communities. The pivotal idea is that we do not have to be stuck in systems that forcibly homogenise the population, potentially leading to more conflict and paralysing dependency.

Building parallel societies is not just about embracing exit ideology and bon voyage mantras. It is about rewilding and reawakening the essence of our communities. This ambition signifies that we must rekindle the human spirit and encourage deep connections with all members. Relationships and community must take centre stage.

You want to find the service that will best satisfy your particular demands, after all, and you know that when banks, cleaners, and vets have to compete they have a powerful incentive to make you happy. A monopoly, in contrast, can take its customers for granted.

Trillions of dollars in illicit financial flows slosh around our financial system today, facilitated by the most powerful centralised institutions. Current efforts to address IFFs are ineffective and result in harmful side effects for some of the most vulnerable in society. In this article, we investigate the causes and impact of IFFs. Despite what certain bankers and politicians might have told you, the transparency and programmability of cryptocurrencies are a solution to, not a cause of, the problem.

In 1666, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz proposed the idea of ‘proving’ important governmental actions using deductions within a universal language. One way to develop his idea would be to say that we can computationally automate these government actions. Here, we push this idea further using Nick Szabo’s idea of ‘smart contracts’. We propose that one can automate key government actions on the blockchain, where they will be reliable, corruption resistant, and transparent to all citizens.

Obsessed with Archives

In the 17th century, the philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz proposed an archive in which documents were ‘kept in such a way that they rest intact and unaltered for future information, and that in that occasion they can be used as certified proofs in justice’. The archival project was, in fact, an obsession of Leibniz’s, but why? What Leibniz saw was that the very nature of good governance cannot be separated from the keeping of archives in a secure and immutable fashion. What Leibniz could not see was that the archives should also be widely accessible, and that to achieve both these goals they must be decentralised. We revisit Leibniz’s ideas and reimagine them with the help of blockchain technology. This article is the first in a series of articles by Peter Ludlow and Jarrad Hope, taken from a forthcoming book by the two.

We are building infrastructure that optimises non-zero-sum interactions, aiming to disempower bad actors without compromising on our principles. For example, censorship may be an effective solution, but it results in capture and other consequences we oppose. In this article, I’ll outline how messages sent on the blockchain can be interpreted and censored, identifying the need for censorship resistance to be built into the very bottom of the technology stack. I’ll also discuss our transformation of the original Whisper protocol into the public good Waku, and how we infuse ethics into the open source protocols we develop.

Logos: A Declaration of Independence in Cyberspace

Abstract: A fully decentralised, privacy-preserving, and politically neutral tech stack would provide the necessary support for self-sovereign virtual territories. Recent breakthroughs in distributed systems, leaderless consensus algorithms, and ZK encryption provide the technical foundation that makes such a base layer possible. By using these technologies to build solutions for communications, storage, and smart contracts, we can incentivise the formation of borderless public institutions based on voluntary consent. This opens the possibility for a culture of resilient parallel societies that maximise the costs of surveillance and coercion, while minimising the costs of exit, voice, and loyalty. Doing this requires a resilient grassroots movement to govern and sustain the network, thereby providing trust-minimised, corruption-resistant governing services and social institutions to underserved citizens.
